Sudanese president to appoint Darfur LJM ministers

December 17, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese president is expected to appoint soon new ministers representing its partner of Doha peace deal Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), a spokesperson of the former rebel group said Saturday.

The Sudanese government and LJM agreed to appoint a federal minister and to state-ministers in the new government but the former rebels failed to hand at time the names of their representatives and the cabinet was announced without them more than a week ago.

LJM spokesperson Ahmed Fadel, made this statement after a meeting between the visiting US special adviser on Darfur Dane Smith and the head of Darfur regional Authority (DRA) Tijani el-Sissi and leader of the former rebel group on Saturday.

Falel said that President Omer al-Bashir received the status of the regional authority and the names of LJM candidates for the national government. He added that the presidency is expected to appoint them soon.

He also said a presidential decree should be soon signed establishing two new states in central and east Darfur. the former rebels will get also the position of governor of one new state, in accordance to a deal they signed.

State minister at the Sudanese presidency Amin Hassa Omer who is tasked with the DDPD implementation in the central government; told the state TV on Friday that they reached an agreement with LJM on the status of the regional authority which will implement the peace document.

Dane Smith arrived from Doha after a meeting with the Qatari state minister for cabinet affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud who chairs the international follow-up committee for the DDPD implementation.

He will brief Sudanese government officials on the outcome of “The State and Direction of the Darfur Peace Process Workshop” organized in Washington last November to discuss the way forward after the signing of the DDPD and how to include the holdout rebel groups in the document.

Faled said the US diplomat emphasized on the need to include all Darfur parties and to associate the nomadic tribes in the implementation process.

The spokesperson also said the meeting discussed the security issues as the ceasefire commission will verify during the next days the positions held by the LJM forces on the ground.

The American official also encouraged the parties to create the conducive conditions for a Darfur-Darfur dialogue to associate tribal and civil society groups in the ongoing efforts to make peace a realty in Darfur.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) led by Khalil Ibrahim was part of the Doha talks but the rebel group asks to open the peace documents for talks but Khartoum rejects this demand. The two rebels factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement reject the DDPD as they are not part of the process.

    MOHAMMED,
YES, THEY MIGHT BE LOOTING RESOURCES BUT AT LEAST WE’RE NOW TALKING ABOUT DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH CARE, EDUCATION, POVERTY, EQUALITY, ROAD CONSTRUCTION ETC. THINGS THAT HAD NEVER BEEN DISCUSSED WHEN WE WERE AS A UNITED SUDAN. DON’T U SEE THE DIFFERENT MOHAMMED?LIKEWISE, DARFUR, BLUE NILE, NUBA AND THE LIKES, WILL NEVER HAVE EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES UNDER ARAB LEADERSHIP IN THE SUDAN.
