S. Sudan Liberal Youth Forum forms executive board

By Julius N. Uma

December 17, 2011 (JUBA) – The first general assembly organised by the South
Sudan Liberal Youth Forum (LYF) on Saturday resolved to form an interim executive board, tasked with legally establishing the organisation and formulating its constitution.

The interim body, comprising of 12 members, will also oversee the process of transforming the organisation into a civil society entity capable of internally generating funds to enable it to meet its aims and objectives.

At the general assembly attended by nearly 30 delegates, the LYF members agreed to also have an advisory body consisting of three people, in addition to the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Secretary General, among others.

Mayar James Ariath, the president of the South Sudanese student union in Uganda pledged his firm commitment in support of the liberal youth initiative, describing it as an important step towards achieving unity in the newly independent country.

Ariath, who was the chief guest at the occasion, said his union will work hand in hand with LYF to help young people, who account for more than half of South Sudan’s population, overcome the challenges ahead of them.

Founded in 2010 by members who attended a global youth conference organised by Organization of Africa Liberal Youth (OALY) and Australian Young Liberals, LYF later joined the OALY and the Africa Liberal Network (ALN).

I just want to felicitate S. Sudanese Liberal Youth Forum for successfully forming an interim executive board. It is time for young people to step up and work hard to serve their own country. Their is no country that can be politically, socially and economically developed by government institutions alone. We need civil organizations to be part of peace building and unity bringing.
