Sudan beat Burkino Faso in African Nations Cup

January 30, 2012 (LONDON) – Sudan progressed to the first quarter finals of the African Nations Cup after defeating Burkino Faso 2-1 on Monday.

Both of Sudan’s goals were scored by Mudather Tayeb, taking them to a second quarter final against Zambia on Saturday.

This is Sudan’s first win at the tournament in 42 years.

Tayeb scored his first goal 33 minutes in, against the run play. His second came after a goal-keeping blunder by Daouda Diakite.

Burkino Faso’s only goal was scored at the end of the game after two near misses by Issiaka Ouedraogo.

Sudan are ranked as the world’s 120th best team and Africa’s 30th best, while Burko Faso as the 14th best in Africa and 66th best in world making Sudan’s victory a significant achievement.
