March 19, 2012 (JUBA) – The newly appointed county commissioners in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have welcomed their assignments, assuring Governor Paul Malong Awan of their willingness to execute their duties with diligence, sincerity and live up to expectations. The assurances were contained in their letters of acceptance of their appointments.

Governor Awan last week issued a gubernatorial order appointing former Maduany Payam administrator, Santo Garang Tong as Commissioner of Aweil West County, replacing Isaac Lual Chol and Lieutenant Colonel Ucu Dechak as commissioner of Aweil Center, replacing Diera Madut Chan.

The same order saw the appointment of Awet Kiir Awet as commissioner of Aweil East County, replacing Kawac Deng Kawac. Awet, until his appointment, was a serving Payam administrator.

Under South Sudan’s transitional constitution governors have the power to appoint and sack county commissioners. The possibility of having elected commissioners is one of the issues being considered in the drafting of the South Sudan’s permanent constitution.
