State of emergency declared along Sudan’s border with South Sudan
April 29, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government declared a state of emergency Sunday along its frontier areas with South Sudan, the country’s official news agency SUNA said, as the military stand off between the two nations continues.
The last three weeks have seen large scale clashes along the oil-rich and contested 1,800 kilometre international border, focused on the disputed Heglig area.
Sudan’s state of emergency will see the constitution suspended in South Kordofan, White Nile and Sennar states.
President Omar Hassan al-Bashir’s resolution imposes a trade embargo on nine-month old South Sudan, which separated from Sudan last year as part of a peace deal that ended two-decades of conflict.
