Egypt FM holds talks with French counterpart on Sudan

CAIRO, June 21, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Mahir held here talks with his French counterpart Michel Barnier. The Sudanese situation and particularly the crisis of Darfur region were among the discussed issues.

According to the Egyptian news agency (MENA), the Egyptian foreign minister underlined the importance of the Egyptian and European role in making sure that all agreements are being implemented.

Mahir said he discussed with Barnier efforts exerted to find a political settlement to the situation in Darfur provinces.

Mahir further added there is an agreement in viewpoint that peace and reconciliation should be realised in all of Sudan.

On his part, the French foreign minister said France backs all efforts exerted by Egypt and the African Union (AU) to achieve peace in Sudan, especially in Darfur provinces.

He indicated that a French officer will take part in the committee to monitor the ceasefire agreement in Sudan.

There are efforts exerted to disarm militias and resume international aid granted to Darfur provinces, he added.
