Unity state traffic accident prone

July 18, 2012 (BENTIU) – Traffic accidents in Unity state have accounted for the deaths of 43 people and injury of 150 in the last three years according to the state traffic police director major, John Juor Yoach.

In an interview with Sudan Tribune on Wednesday, Yoach explained that the highest concentration of deaths was in Market Seven of the state capital, Benitu, where nine people have died this year alone.

Yoach urged drivers to limit their speed to 30km/h in the Market area, and 40km/h in the town in general. “When you are negligent you will die and you will kill other also and your vehicle will be damaged and you will damage others,” he warned.

According to a resident of the Market Seven region, Santino Kondial, the South Sudanese army, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), are responsible for many of the traffic accidents. The resident claimed that a man was hit by a reckless SPLA vehicle in the market on Monday, he called upon the government to act to prevent the SPLA from driving carelessly and abusing alcohol in the area.
