Jonglei’s Duk county urges govt to provide basic services to over 7,000 citizens

August, 24, 2012 (BOR) – Jonglei’s Duk county commissioner, Elijah Mochnom Wuor, said the government must provide better assistance to the people of Toc, a swampy region in the east of the county.

Wuol explained that the 7,000 people of Toc have been isolated for 21 years due to poor transport and communication networks and have insufficient education and health facilities.

According to Wuor 1,000 too 2,000 children in the area have not been vaccinated and are not attending school.

“There are people living on riverside but they are not known about by the authorities”, said Wuor, adding that “ I am appealing to the state and to my colleagues to see them […] they are also important.”
 
Wuol added that he has provided some medical supplies and nurses to help the people for the time-being.

The people of Toc may migrate to Lakes state’s Yerwul county if the situation does not improve, claimed Wuol. The inhospitality of the region is compounded by regional insecurity he added.

The people of Toc were not included in the 2008 national census according to Wuol, who explained that their inclusion would increase the county’s population from 65,000 too 71,000.
