Mortar attack on South Kordofan capital, one woman killed

October 8, 2012 (KHARTOUM) – At least one woman was killed and another individual wounded when mortar shells hit Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state eye witnesses told Sudan Tribune.

According to reports received from Kadugli, four shells fell in different parts of the city: one in Kadugli market, the second nearby the headquarters of Popular Defence Forces, the third fell between buildings of the state radio and a school and the fourth landed near the branch of Bank of Sudan.

A woman was killed by a shell that hit Kadugli market while an employee at the radio station was injured by another bomb.

The attack coincided with the launch of a conference on peace in South Kordofan today attended by leading political figures from the ruling National Congress Party and political parties participating in the national coalition.

Presidential assistant, and deputy chairman of the ruing party, Nafie Ali Nafie, was supposed to attend the conference but he dispatched NCP political secretary Hassabo Mohamed Abdel Rahman to represent him.

There is no claim of responsibility for Monday’s mortar attack on Kadguli, but the Sudanese army have been fighting the outlawed Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – North (SPLM-N) in the region since June 2011.
