Darfur IDPs
Following the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), and the relative calm that reigned in the region, the IDPs staged a spontaneous and unprepared return to their villages.
Darfur Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) dismissed accusations of supporting rebel groups saying they only share with them the concern of security issue declaring their willingness to work with all the parties.
According to UN OCHA there are some 1.7 million IDPs registered in Darfur camps while the who number of displaced civilians estimated at 3.2 million people.
Being the victims of deadly attacks, rape and other atrocities, the displace civilians during the first years of the conflict showed their support to the positions of the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdel Wahid Al-Nur (SLM-AW) which demand to provide security and to disarm the militias who are accused of atrocities and war crimes.
The rebel group also demanded to repair the consequences of this crimes by bringing the perpetrators to justice and to pay financial compensations to the affected people.
Speaking to Sudan Tribune, from Kalma, a camp considered as a stronghold of SLM-AW, Hussein Abu Sharati, IDPs spokesperson said they are ready to cooperate with all the international, national aid groups and government bodies concerned the humanitarian action.
He also said the humanitarian aid distributed to the different IDPs camps is diminishing among accusations that the distribution of food encourage people particularly the youth to not work and spend their time on political issues.
The local authorities, according to Abu Sharti, accuse the IDPs of sending some of the aid they receive to the rebel fighters.
“We are innocent of these charges,” he said adding ” we do not perform any other political or military activities. And we want to ensure that we deal and are ready to deal with all the humanitarian parties including the humanitarian commission which is tasked with humanitarian issues,” he stressed.
