Lakes State politicians lobby for position ahead anticipated reshuffle
March 18, 2013 (RUMBEK) – Politicians in Lakes state are jockeying for position in order to be selected by the new Governor for jobs in his new cabinet, as county commissioners, and advisors.
A document obtained by Sudan Tribune names 38 members of South Sudan’s ruling party – the SPLM – who have put themselves forward for consideration ahead of an anticipated reshuffle.
Lakes state’s politicians have anticipated the move since January when South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit removed the elected Governor Chol Tong Mayay in January, and replaced him with military caretaker Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol.
Local politicians have been gathering at the SPLM’s offices in order to lobby for their selection for much sought after ministerial posts and persuade the SPLM’s acting secretary, Mabor Ater Dhuol, to propose them for key positions.
The list of candidates obtained by Sudan Tribune was undated and it is unclear why he has not made any adjustments to the states executive and other positions. The Governor has however warned county commissioners that they will lose their jobs if the fail to arrest those involved in recent inter-communal violence,
Some sources in Lakes state speculate that Governor Dhuol’s priority has been security reform but it is also unclear whether as an unelected caretaker governor he has the power to change the makeup of the state government.
