Sudan opposition denies plot to bomb NUP rally
July 1, 2013, (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese opposition umbrella known as the National Consensus Forces (NCF) rejected accusations by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) of plotting to blow up a rally by the National Umma Party (NUP) held last Saturday.
The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) condemned the attempt saying it is a “bankrupt” method that is unacceptable in Sudan.
But Kamal Omer, spokesman for the NCF who is also the s political secretary of the Popular Congress Party (PCP), said at a press conference on Monday that the alleged plot “is not our style”.
“If we were to sabotage we would choose locations where there are none of our supporters and we hope the day does not come when are forced to do so as we have been as patient as Job with the regime”.
Omer also strongly criticized the refusal of the authorities to allow opposition to set up seminars even though it allows non-registered Islamic movements to do so.
He warned that preventing political parties from holding rallies encourages them to resort to armed action, pointing out that the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) insurgents took up arms due to the policy of prevention and repression.
