Unity state governor dissolves entire government

August 4, 2013 (JUBA) – The caretaker governor of South Sudan’s Unity state, Joseph Monytuil on Friday dissolved his entire government, a move seen as a response to the president’s recent directive.

President Salva Kiir, on Thursday, presented his new cabinet structure to the 10 state governors, asking them to also downsize their own administrations at the state level.

Also affected was Unity state’s deputy governor and nine other ministers. The governor’s decision equally affected four state advisors.

Kiir, the state-owned SSTV reported, also called for cooperation among all the state governors and federal ministers, saying it will enhance effective delivery of basic services to citizens.

He further urged the governors, mainly from the south-ruling Sudan People’s Liberations Movement (SPLM), to help him restructure and strengthen the local offices of the party in their various states.

It however remains unclear as to how governors can be directly involved in the restructuring of the ruling party as some of them do not have control of the local structures in their areas.
