Four killed in Lakes state revenge attack
August 29, 2013 (RUMBEK) – A revenge attack on Sunday night in South Sudan’s Lakes state left four people dead, authorities said.
“In the one incident, two men were shot dead in Yirol West County,” David Marial Gumke told Sudan Tribune Tuesday.
“Unknown men stormed the house of a citizen in Yirol West County and killed two people. And later on, the citizen from Yirol West revenged, killing a man and his wife in the house at mid night,” he added.
Majak Ruei, the Yirol West commissioner, said a person was arrested in connection with the attack, but gave no further details
Early this month, two teachers were killed in a separate revenge attack in a remote Rumbek East village, but security agents reportedly apprehended the suspects.
The latest attack comes just days after a peace conference held in the region, urged dialogue and forgiveness among the various communities.
Lakes state caretaker governor, Matur Chut Dhoul has instituted tough measures to curb increasing levels of violence in the region.
In February, for instance, he ordered for immediate arrest of all young men suspected to have taken part in violent clashes between pastoralist groups in Rumbek East.
Dhoul also adopted a tough stance on insecurity in the region, warning that those arrested for involvement in cattle raids and inter-clan fights, would be held in secret prisons and kept away from their families.
Several human right bodies, including Human Rights Watch, have strongly condemned the governor’s military approach, saying its a violation of citizens’ fundamental rights.
