E. Equatoria minister warns against anarchy, urges reconciliation

September 5, 2013 (TORIT) – A minister in South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state has warned against anarchy, urging communities in its Nyong payam to reconcile their differences and live in harmony with one another.

Clement Laku Chichim, the state minister for information, telecommunication and parliamentary affairs made these remarks while meeting adhoc committee members and intellectuals from the community.

The delegation,led by ex-Torit county commissioner John Savio, were on a mission to brief the minister about current differences among Nyong communities and what role government can play to restore order.

“The decision of the government was that they don’t want anarchy, to happen in the state simply because of a problem that can easily be solved,” the minister said.

Today, we have to accept democracy because there is no one above that and it can lead us to the way forward, he added.

Chichim, who met the Nyong delegation in his office, also warned its leaders against misuse of the media, but advised them to resolve existing differences democratically to uphold their unity.

The minister, in his remarks, also cautioned section of the community against inciting people on land-related matters.

Jurisdiction on land administration, Chichim stressed, is the mandate of the state government and the county administrator, who plan, survey and lease land to the public.

However, the adhoc committee of intellectuals accused their chairperson, Eddy William Mutek of allegedly misleading the community and blocking efforts to reform its leadership.

They further accused their chairperson of being “arrogant”, and that he “runs the communities like a family institution, without accountability and respect after dismissing all his executive members”.

Sudan Tribune could not easily reach Mutek for his reactions over the matter.
