Kenyan national killed in Rumbek market

December 9, 2013 (RUMBEK) – An unknown gunman killed a well known Kenyan shoe shiner in Rumbek Central county of Lakes state on Sunday night near Mathiang Ajuong, which is located inside Rumbek’s main market.

A businessman, Simon Wani, said that “a gunshot was heard at night inside Rumbek market and Kenyan national who is 35 year old was killed.”

Wani said that killing of Kenyan national “is very bad in our state.”

A police officer at the Criminal Investigation Department of (CID) said that the community in Lakes state were not completely cooperating with the authorities. The officer, who did not want to be named, said this was due to the governor’s controversial security measures, since he was appointed in January.

Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol has banned alcohol consumption and brewing and under his leadership the security services have been accused of making many arbitrary arrests. Those detained at the Langcok military prison have often complained that they were tortured or mistreated.

“People are very frustrated and they are not cooperating with us, they mislead us when they provided information and sometimes the refuse and ask you to contact caretaker Governor to provide information – this is unacceptable behaviour.”

Police did not provide the name of Kenyan national, who is believed to have been shot while returning from a football match.
