Sudan’s RNM, LJM call for release of political detainees

August 30, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Reform Now Movement (RNM) and Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) issued a joint statement on Saturday calling for confidence-building measures to bolster the ongoing dialogue process including allowing public freedoms, freedom of the press and media and the release of all detainees and political activists immediately.

RNM chief Ghazi Salah al-Din al-Attabani and LJm leader al-Tijani al-Sisi, who is also head of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA), held a meeting on Saturday to consult about the current political situation and the process of national dialogue.

A joint statement following the meeting stressed the need to have an inclusive comprehensive dialogue process and the importance of contacting all political forces and parties and armed groups and invite them to join the dialogue in an active and genuine manner.

The two sides also agreed on what they called the basic principles necessary for the dialogue which leads to national consensus by considering serious dialogue the only way out of the crises faced by the country.

They also emphasised that the implementation of what has been agreed upon in the roadmap and the need to develop schedules and time-bound measures to carry out the dialogue in order to ensure achieving the desired goals and objectives.

Both parties stated that dialogue and its results should lead to “solving the problems of Sudan and the creation of a new political reality and a positive change of political activities in the Sudan”.
