Yemen urges international help for Sudan
SANAA, Yemen, August 01, 2004 (UPI) — Yemen Sunday urged the international community to help Sudan restore peace and stability in its troubled western Darfur region.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qarbi called on the world to “help Sudan achieve the needed steps and not limit its role to only demanding that Sudan quickly restore security and stability in Darfur.”
He insisted the international community should provide assistance and support to deal with the fighting in Sudan’s western region, which he said was “bigger in area than an entire European country.”
The Yemeni minister’s comments follow U.N. Security Council adoption of a resolution giving the Sudanese government 30 days to stop the Darfur ethnic fighting that has left 50,000 people dead and a million people homeless.
Al-Qarbi, due to travel Monday to Khartoum, said the Sudan government has taken a series of measures to restore security in Darfur.
