Warrap state youth demand respect for constitution

October19, 2014 (WAU) – A youth leader in South Sudan’s Warrap state urged citizens to uphold the country’s transitional constitution.

“We must uphold the constitutional and democratic arrangements in South Sudan,” said Peter Mayen, the state youth chairperson.

He was reacting to recent calls by sections of youth in the state demanding uprisings against president Salva Kiir’s government.

“This is a selfish and baseless call,” said Mayen, adding that there was no objective in the rebellion led by former vice president, Riek Machar.

He accused those rebelling against the current government of having allegedly failed to deliver when they were officer bearers.

“The rebels only need power [but] we cannot fight for it since there are democratic processes for elections accordance to South Sudan’s Transitional Constitution, not through rebellion,” he said.

Mayen also reiterated calls for peace in the country, saying it can only be attained if people respect the legitimately elected government.

“President Kiir never imposed himself on to the people of South Sudan, but was voted for during the 2010 elections,” he added.
