Jonglei governor frees female protestors

February 17, 2015 (BOR) – The caretaker governor of South Sudan’s Jonglei state, John Kong Nyuon on Tuesday ordered the release of the 26 women protestors arrested defying authorities last month.

Governor Nyuon told reporters that the women “blindly” acted in support of some individuals, but declined to name any.

He warned Dokdit Chuor, who led the protestors, not to avoid any future demonstration.

“From today, she [Dokdit] is free with her group, if they come again in any protest; I will not spare them anymore”, Nyuon told reporters.

“I know the person behind them [protestors]”, he stressed.

Last month, women took to the street accusing Nyuon and his administration of corruption and weaknesses, allegations he dismisses.

“I am working for peace; I don’t see you like Nuer or Dinka. I need peace among you people,” Nyuon told reporters in Bor town.

“The problem was not between Dinka and Nuer”, he further added.

Nyuon, however, advised security forces not to mistreat the women.
