Woman killed in fresh air attack in S. Kordofan: rebels

April 17, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) said a Sudanese warplane killed a women and injured several civilians in a raid carried out on Friday on a rebel-held area in South Kordofan.

In a statement extended to Sudan Tribune, Arnu Nugultu Lodi said a Sudanese army (SAF) Antonov aircraft bombarded Tanpona areas in Kurmuk county, killing one woman and wounding five other civilians.

“The bombardment caused fear and terror among the people. Therefore SPLA-N forces responded by targeting NCP forces and militias positions,” Lodi said.

The rebel group recently carried out a series of mortar attacks on the state capital Kadugli and Dilling.

The SPLM-N said its attacks targeted military objectives and aimed to disrupt the electoral process in South Kordofan.

Sudanese government officials said rebel shells had killed six civilians, including two children.

Since the start of the conflict in the Two Areas, the government and the SPLM-N have failed to strike a lasting peace deal or ceasefire.

African Union mediators also failed to bring the two parties together to sign humanitarian agreements allowing the delivery of food and immunisation programmes in conflict-affected areas.
