S. Sudan VP, senior US officials discuss peace agreement

September 28, 2015 (NEW YORK) – South Sudan’s vice president, James Wani Igga held a “fruitful” meeting with United States officials Sunday in New York, his spokesperson said.

Discussions, according to David Mayen, mainly focused on South Sudan’s recent peace deal signed between the armed opposition, government and the other political entities.

The vice president, Mayen said, held talks with US special envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, Donald Booth and Thomas Shannon, Counselor at the US State Department.

“The two ambassadors called the current compromise made by the government to be for the sake of ‘a second birth’ of the state, after the first birth four years ago”, he said.

During the meeting, the US reportedly pledged commitment to support South Sudanese. Washington played a key role in ending over two decades of a bloody civil war in Sudan.

Igga and the senior US officials reportedly explored ways of how the implementation phase of the peace accord could be funded to create awareness about its provisions.

The vice president is currently in New York to attend the UN General Assembly meetings.
