Dinka Bor community back President Kiir’s decree on new states
October 19, 2015 (BOR) – Thousands of the Dinka Bor community on Monday staged a peaceful demonstration supporting President Salva Kiir’s recent decree on creation of 28 new states in the country while condemning anyone opposed to the latter’s directive.
The demonstrators presented a petition to the caretaker governor, John Koang Nyuon in which they supported President Kiir for creating new states in Jonglei.
Geu Wunthony, who spoke on behalf of the people of the three counties as he handed the letter to the governor, read the letter to the public in Bor.
“We the people of Greater Bor register our constant and unwavering support to your wise leadership as the founding cornerstone of the Republic of South Sudan”, said Geu Wunthony, who spoke on behalf of the demonstrators.
‘But we strongly condemn in the strongest word, the outside powers who are unscrupulously interfering in our internal affairs by asking our president to reverse his decision. No to that alienable request and yes to our president’s inalienable, wise and bold historical decision”, he added.
The Trioka trio of the United States, Norway and the United Kingdom as well as the European Union and East African regional bloc (IGAD) have all voiced concerns against the creation of new states in South Sudan, saying it violates the peace agreement.
As he received the petition, Koang said President kiir’s directive on new states was to spur development in the country. He said the move was not intended to divide the people.
“If the government is taking the hospital, schools, and every thing necessary they need in the villages, what will they come to look for in the big towns? That is the main reason for the division of the states to 28 states. The division is for development, it was not mean to divide people”, he assured the public.
Mabil Majok, one of the chiefs in Duk county, told the gathering that by creating more states and delegating leadership roles to them, President kiir’s order will help to speed up development in the rural areas. He further argued that the current power struggle in South Sudan that forced thousands to hazardous life in the country will come to an end.
“What kills people here in South Sudan is a struggle to get into power. Now the he[Kiir] has divided the leadership roles to the people in different places. Any one who will leave his state leadership just to come and destroy the government; the world will the world will watch him”, he said.
Members of the Dinka Bor community said the newly created Jonglei state would remain unchanged even if government reversed its directive in response to external pressure.
