Two IDPs killed in South Darfur camp
April 25, 2016 (NYALA) – Two displaced persons (IDPs) have been killed and one injured in an armed robbery at Diraje IDP camp in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, on Sunday.
A security official who preferred to remain anonymous told Sudan Tribune that four gunmen opened fire on three IDPs who were walking to their camp after they refused to give their belongings. Two of them were killed on the spot while the third was seriously injured and was taken to Nyala Teaching Hospital.
The perpetrator fled the crime scene, he added.
The relatives of the victims carried their bodies of the dead to meet the governor. However; they were stopped by the police who convinced them that the governor will visit them.
The camp residents expressed anger at the incident, pointing to the escape of the perpetrators and the failure of the security forces to arrest them despite their massive deployment in the town.
However, the state official said fully restored security in Nyala requires implement the security arrangement and disarm the former rebel groups, to readjust the inadequate presence of the police forces and to better control them.
The South Darfur government has imposed the state of emergency since August 2014 following a sharp deterioration in security. The city saw frequent looting, murder and kidnapping incidents in downtown.
As part of those measures, a curfew was imposed from 10:00pm and vehicles with no number plates were banned.
300.000 people were killed in Darfur since the war has been erupted in 2003 and 3 million were displaced according to the United Nations.
