Sudan vows to facilitate UN humanitarian activities
June 29, 2016 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government has announced readiness to cooperate with the UN agencies working in the humanitarian field, reiterating commitment to issue the required permits and facilitation.
Several foreign humanitarian organizations complain from restrictions imposed by the Sudanese authorities on their movements in conflict areas, especially in Darfur’s Jebel Marra where the Sudanese army seeks to retake rebel positions in the mountainous area.
United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Marta Ruedas, recently revealed, UN inability to have access into the areas affected by the recent fighting in Jebel Marra because of the failure to obtain an official permit.
In the meantime, the official Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) said that the government of Sudan is keen to facilitate the delivery of the humanitarian assistance, affirming readiness to collaborate and coordinate with the aid agencies and voluntary groups operating in Sudan.
In a press statement extended to Sudan Tribune, HAC said it is committed to providing protection, granting permits and facilities required for the delivery of the humanitarian aid, besides supporting the rehabilitation efforts to normalize the situation in the affected areas, especially Darfur.
The government humanitarian body further lauded what it described as “good cooperation” with the UN agencies and the concerned ministries to prepare a UN humanitarian response plan.
The plan, which includes several axes to improve the humanitarian situation, will be launched in the first half of July.
HAC has urged all national and international partners to exert further joint efforts to consolidate the humanitarian situations and support the government endeavours aimed to move from the stage of urgent relief to early recovery and rehabilitation.
The Sudanese army says it is now in full control of Jebel Marra area after nearly four month of fighting with Sudan Liberation movement – Abdel Wahid. However, the rebel group says its fighters are still in the area.
