Sudan to deploy more than 2000 policemen in Darfur

KHARTOUM, Aug 29, 2004 (MENA) — The Sudanese government is preparing to deploy more than 2,000 policemen in Darfur states next month, Interior Minister Abd-al-Rahim Muhammad Husayn has said.

Sudanese_police_officer.jpgAfter reporting to the cabinet about the situation in Darfur, the minister said the government has deployed in August more than 2600 policemen in Darfur, recalling that the number agreed upon with the UN was only 2000.

He asserted that the security situation in the troubled region was steadily improving.

The minister cited positive reports by the UN and the Sudan-UN mechanism on the delivery of humanitarian aid, food supplies, health care and security in camps.

Meanwhile, committees affiliated to the Sudan-UN mechanism will meet Monday to draft the reports prepared by its three delegations following their visits to Darfur recently.
