Sudan arrests opposition militants for “subversion”: radio
KHARTOUM, Sept 8 (AFP) — The Sudanese government has arrested an unknown number of Islamist opposition militants for “subversion,” official radio reported on Wednesday.
The suspects from the party of prominent jailed Islamist leader Hassan Turabi were accused of buying arms from an unidentified neighbouring country, according to an intelligence services statement broadcast by the radio.
Sudanese sources told AFP said the raids against members of Turabi’s Popular Congress party occurred overnight.
Turabi is in prison awaiting trial on a raft of offences against the state including incitement to sedition, sabotage and undermining the regime.
He was detained in late March amid government allegations of a coup attempt by sympathisers of the ethnic minority rebels in the strife-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur.
