Sudanese personalities awarded Prize Friedrich Ebert for human rights

BERLIN, Sep 27, 2004 — Two Sudanese personalities were awarded with the annual human rights award of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), one of the most important German political foundations.

Abel Alier, former vice president of Sudan and former president of the regional parliament in the south, well known lawyer and political adviser, and Mohamed Mahjoub Salih, journalist, cofounder and editor of the Khartoum based “Al Ayam” daily newspaper.

On September, 22, 2004, the laudation was held by the German minister for Economic co-operation and development, Mrs Heide-Marie Wiescorek-Zeul, in the presence of a big audience, consisting of ambassadors, members of parliament, journalists, (NGO) representatives and the German public.

The two Sudanese personalities were awarded for their long lasting outstanding courage and commitment to peace and human rights, being well recognised national symbols in their country.
