Canada pledges to support humanitarian, peace efforts in Sudan

Aileen_Carroll.jpgKHARTOUM, Sep 26, 2004 (SUNA) — The Canadian government announced its support to the humanitarian and peace efforts in Sudan and allocated some 10. 8 million dollars.

Speaking in a press conference Saturday at Hilton hotel Khartoum at the end of her visit to Sudan, the Canadian minister of international cooperation, Ms Aileen Carroll, said that Canada will provide an additional 10.8m dollar for humanitarian aid and peace building efforts in Sudan.

She explained that the Canadian support would be extended to five international organizations, including the World Food Programme, International Committee of Red Cross, Canadian Foodgrains Bank, Save the Children Canada, and the International Rescue Committee.

Ms Carroll explained that her country understands the efforts being exerted by the government of Sudan towards solving the issues of the South and Darfur region.

It is to be noted that the Canadian minister visited the region of Darfur where she inspected the real humanitarian and security situations as well as the Nuba Mountains.

In this regard, she affirmed improvement of humanitarian situations in Darfur, referring to her tour and conversations with the humanitarian officials there. The Canadian minister met with the Sudanese officials in Khartoum and Darfur.
