UN agency temporarily suspends some Darfur aid On violence

ROME, OCt 13, 2004 (AP) — Rising security problems including armed attacks on aid convoys have led the U.N.’s World Food Program to temporarily suspend aid deliveries in some parts of Darfur, Sudan , the Rome-based organization said Wednesday.

The_headquarters_of_WFP_in_al-Fasher.jpgHumanitarian operations in North Darfur were halted Sunday after two staff members of Save the Children U.K. were killed in an explosion caused by a land mine or unexploded ordnance, the agency said.

It also reported several attacks by armed bandits on humanitarian vehicles over the past week.

“Internally displaced people remain nervous and fearful of attack when they leave locations where they have gathered for shelter,” the WFP said.

It said the deteriorating security situation threatens efforts by the WFP to increase aid deliveries. It hopes to be feeding 2 million people a month in Darfur by the end of the year.
