Ethiopia set to build over 100 small and medium dams: PM
May 31, 2021 (ADDIS ABABA) – Ethiopia is set to construct over 100 small and medium dams in various regional states in the coming new fiscal year, the country’s Prime Minister disclosed.
Abiy Ahmed made the remarks on Saturday while launching the first phase of the Adama-Awash 60 kilometres expressway, which seeks to enhance socio-economic integration with Djibouti and neighbouring countries.
“The nation is set to build over 100 small and medium dams in various regions by the coming Ethiopian budget year which targeted to produce agricultural products three times per year thereby ensure food security,” he was quoted saying at the launching ceremony.
The Prime Minister appealed to all Ethiopians to join hands to achieve such crucial ambitions and other developmental programs.
The Horn of Africa nation is facing increasing international pressure over the conflict in the Tigray region. A week ago, the United States imposed restrictions on economic and security assistance to Ethiopia over the conflict.
The United States government further said it would bar current or former Ethiopian or Eritrean officials it deems responsible for the crisis.
Reacting to Ethiopia`s relation with the rest of the world, Abiy said diplomacy is the manifestation of the Horn of Africa nation has been one of the founding members of the then Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the United Nations.
He, however, stressed the importance of unity, saying Ethiopia will be transformed and prosperity will be its manifestation in the coming years.
