Bush extends sanctions against Sudan

DES MOINES, Iowa, Nov 1 (AFP) — US President George W. Bush has extended for one year sanctions against Sudan, a country Washington considers a sponsor of terrorism, the White House announced Monday.

Because Sudan’s actions and policies “continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States, the national emergency declared on November 3, 1997, and the measures adopted on that date to deal with that emergency must continue,” read a White House statement.

The statement is signed by Bush, currently campaigning for re-election in the midwestern state of Iowa.

Measures against Sudan include an economic embargo.
