Jordan supports efforts to stabilize Sudan

Jordanian_King.jpgAMMAN, Nov 23, 2004 (Xinhua) — Jordan has pledged to work with Arab countries and the international communities to ensure security and stability in Sudan, especially in Darfur region, the television reported Tuesday.

Jordan will spare no efforts on a bilateral level and within the frameworks of the United Nations and the Arab League to ensure stability in Sudan and end violence in strife-torn Darfur, government spokeswoman Asma Khader was quoted as saying.

Last month, Jordan sent an aircraft laden with humanitarian and medical aid and a team consisting of 17 doctors and medical technicians to Darfur.

The United Nations said on Monday that it plans to deploy 7,000 peacekeeping troops to southern Sudan to monitor a peace deal and relocate its offices there from neighboring Kenya, the report said.

The UN Security Council held a special session in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Nov. 18-19 and passed a resolution demanding the Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army finalize their peace talks by the end of this year.

Violence flared up in February 2003 between Janjaweed militia and local farmers in the western Sudanese region of Darfur over scarce water and resources.
