Chad urges Sudan govt, splinter Darfur rebels to talk

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Mar 14, 2005 (PANA) — Chadian mediators said they have
intensified efforts aimed at reactivating peace talks between the
government in Khartoum and the breakaway rebel Movement for
Development and Reform (DMDR) in the western Darfur region.

The government-owned Sudan Media Centre on Monday quoted Hassan
Bargo, a key Chadian government negotiator in the peace talks
with DMDR, as saying that the next round of talks might convene
before the end of March in N’djamena.

Government authorities in Khartoum and DMDR signed a
comprehensive cease-fire accord last December in Chad and
subsequently released all prisoners of war on both sides.

“Agendas for next round will concentrate on security and
political issues,” the new agency quoted Bargo, who arrived here
Saturday from N’djamena and the border city of Abashi.

The agency said Bargo discussed completion of refugees’ voluntary
repatriation from Chadian border towns to their home areas inside
Sudan, with the follow-up committee on implementation the
framework protocol that was signed two months ago with DMDR.

Rebels of Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) and the Justice and
Equality Movement (JEM) are also fighting government troops in
Darfur.
