UN-chartered plane shot over Juba

KHARTOUM, Apr 6, 2005 (SUNA) — An aircraft chartered by the UN to deliver fuel to Juba town, capital of the southern Sudan, was fired at on 2 April.

Speaking to the press, the official spokesman of the UN special mission to Sudan , George Somerwill, said gunshots were fired at the aircraft as it was overflying a region north of Juba town.

He pointed out, however, that the special mission did not know yet who was behind the attack.

He went on to say that the mission was taking the incident seriously, and that it was working with the local authorities to find out why the aircraft was attacked and who was behind it.
