Sudan calls for lifting US sanctions on aircraft spare parts
KHARTOUM, Aug 22 (AFP) — Sudan has appealed to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to help lift US sanctions preventing the delivery of spare parts to its US-made aircraft, a press report said Friday.
The state-run Al Anbaa daily said State Minister for Civil Aviation Mohamed Hassan al-Bahi asked a visiting ICAO delegation for assistance in ending the embargo on US-made aircraft spare parts.
The embargo is part of sanctions imposed by the United States which keeps Sudan on the list of states sponsoring terrorism.
The delegation promised to offer technical assistance to the Ministry of Aviation and to Sudan Airways, the newspaper reported.
A Sudan Airways Boeing 737 crashed in June on the east coast of the country, killing 115 of the 116 passengers and crew. Khartoum has blamed the accident on the lack of spare parts. Only a child survived the crash.
