Sudanese opposition NDA must fix date for Cairo talks-govt
KHARTOUM, May 7, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has been officially informed that the government will not sit with it unless NDA fixed the date for signing the Cairo peace accord.
However, analysts say such a move by the government will create new crisis between the two sides.
The NDA has termed the government’s conditions and its new stand as dangerous and stubborn, adding that that it lacked vision for the national interests.
It further said that such a move was aimed at buying Sudan’s time which cannot bear it, but rather needs collective effort from all the people of Sudan.
“What can been deduced out of this information confirms that the position adopted by the government is covering up their real position which is its unwillingness to implement what we have agreed upon in the Cairo talks,” said Faruq Abu Eisa, the deputy NDA chairman.
Speaking to Al-Ayyam, Faruq further said that government has resolved to inter-change all the issues which it agreed with NDA, which are the core issues of the Cairo peace talks, which are also considered to be the main issues which would bring about democratic changes, with functions of constitution review committee.
“We [NDA members] have learnt through the discussions of constitution committee that the committee was given a task to make laws, which, in our opinion, is fundamental to democratic changes, in a commission which the government has majority seats. In this regard, the government was not ready to implement the Cairo agreement,” he added.
