Malaysia’s Petronas Awarded New E&P Contract In Sudan

SINGAPORE, Aug 29, 2003 (Dow Jones) — Malaysia's state-owned Petronas (P.PET) late Thursday signed its eighth oil and gas exploration and production sharing contract in Sudan for Block 8.

The onshore block, which will be jointly operated by Petronas Carigali and Sudanese national oil company SUDAPET, covers an area of 65,856 square kilometers in the Blue Nile Basin, located northeast of Sudan's Melut Basin.

Petronas Carigali Overseas holds a 77% stake in the block, SUDAPET 15%, and High Tech Group 8%.

Besides Block 8, Petronas also has stakes in Block 1, 2, 3, 4, 5A, 5B and 7 in Sudan.

Petronas is also active in both the upstream and downstream petroleum sectors in Sudan, including marketing petroleum products.
