Constitution panel suspended in protest of Soba clashes
KHARTOUM, May 19, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — Sessions of the Constitution Review Commission were suspended yesterday following a request by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) protesting against the forced eviction of displaced people by police from Soba West, about 30 km south of Khartoum.
SPLM official spokesman Yasir Arman said the SPLM was saddened by the incidents, which had caused many casualties.
He further said a meeting had been held in Khartoum between the governor of Khartoum and the head of the SPLM delegation, Nhial Deng, to discuss the issue.
Arman explained that participants to the meeting had agreed that displaced people should not be forcibly evicted and to further study the issue so as to find a solution.
