Eritrea unresolved on G-4 resolution on UNSC reform
TOKYO, June 13, 2005 (Jiji Press) — Eritrea’s visiting Foreign Minister Ali Said Abdella on Monday stopped short of showing the African nation’s stance on a draft resolution mapped by the Group of Four nations for expanding the U.N. Security Council.
At a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura, Ali supported Japan’s bid to become a permanent member of the Security Council, pointing to the country’s substantial contributions to the United Nations.
But Ali said that Eritrea will study whether to support the G-4 resolution carefully.
In the resolution, the four nations–Japan, Germany, India and Brazil–are calling for increasing the number of permanent members of the Security Council to 11 from the current five.
They have been aspiring for permanent seats on the powerful U.N. organ.
The resolution also proposes that the number of nonpermanent members be increased to 14 from 10.
