Sudan V. president discusses Darfur with UK special envoy
KHARTOUM, July 13, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — The first vice-president of the republic, John Garang, has held talks with the British special envoy for peace in Darfur, Alan Goulty, to discuss a number of challenges facing the new government, especially the situation in Darfur.
After the meeting, Alan Goulty said he had stressed to the first vice-president Britain’s interest in what was happening in Darfur and its efforts to narrow the differences between the negotiating sides in Abuja, The Sudanese radio reported.
Alan Goulty, veteran Sudan specialist, had been appointed Britain’s special representative for Darfur last June.
International Development Minister Hilary Benn said Goulty “will support the AU-led work to achieve a durable political settlement to the Darfur conflict, keeping in regular contact with all the main parties.”
