Second batch of Indian locomotives for Sudan soon

NEW DELHI, India, July 13, 2005 — The Indian Railways is in the procoess of manufacturing the second batch of the low cost locomotives for export to Sudan, through Rites.

The first batch of four locomotives was sent to Sudan in December 2004 and they are reported to be functioning well.

These locomotives are being offered to Sudan at significantly lower costs.

These have been modified to suit Sudan’s requirements. Compared to metre gauge (1000mm), which is in use in India, Sudan has cape gauge system (1067 mm).

According to sources, a batch of six locomotives is currently being overhauled and modified. These would be shipped within the next three months.

Rites officials told FE that the modifications included change of couplers and improving air brakes to suit the rolling stock of Sudan.

Apart from this, the old Hitachi locomotives of Sudan Railway Corporation are also being rehabilitated by Rites.
