Sudan: Foreign minister to leave for USA to attend UN summit

Khartoum, Sept 19, 2003 (SUNA) — Foreign Minister Dr Mustafa Uthman Isma’il, is due to leave tomorrow Saturday for New York to participate at the meetings of the 58th session of the UN General Assembly, which are scheduled to begin on Tuesday 23 September.

Dr Isma’il will present Sudan’s address before the UN General Assembly on September 29.

Dr Isma’il said in a press statement that Sudan address will cast light on the current situation in Sudan at the political, economic and social fields, besides Sudan peace process and regional issues, such as the Palestinian and Iraqi questions.

The minister pointed out that Sudan address before the General Assembly will also tackle a number of international issues, such as UN reform, human being cloning, terrorism, human rights and the questions of conflicts and debts in Africa.

Meanwhile, Dr Isma’il said that he will participate at meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly’s session to reflect Sudan visions on different issues, especially that Sudan is the current chairman of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).

Dr Isma’il said that he will meet a number of the participating foreign ministers at the UN General Assembly’s meetings, including the foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the Security Council, besides a number of his Arab, African and Asian counterparts.

The Foreign Minister said that he would meet with the UN secretary-general, Kofi Annan, and a number of the heads of state and government and leaders who will take part at General Assembly’s 58th session in New York, including the chairman of the African Union, to convey to them messages from the president of the republic concerning Sudan peace process.

Dr Isma’il said that he will participate in a number of ministerial meetings of the Arab, African and Non-Aligned Groups, besides the Group of 77.
