FACTBOX-Attendees at Garang funeral in Sudan
JUBA, Sudan, Aug 5 (Reuters) – The funeral for John Garang, the leader of southern Sudan who died in a weekend air crash, is to take place on Saturday in the regional capital Juba.
A large international presence will pay last respects to Garang, who headed the former rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) and became Sudan’s vice-president last month after a January peace deal ending 21 years of war.
Those who have confirmed attendance so far are:
– Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
– Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa.
– South African President Thabo Mbeki.
– Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni.
– Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki
– Head of the EU’s Sudan delegation Kent Degerfeld.
– For the U.S. government, USAID administrator Andrew Natsios will lead a delegation. U.S. envoys Connie Newman and Roger Winter, who have been in Sudan this week, will also attend along with U.S. charge d’affaires to Sudan John Limbert and U.S. congressman Rep. Donald Payne.
– Dutch Development Minister Agnes van Ardenne.
– Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
– Sweden’s Minister for International Cooperation Carin Jamtin.
