Sudanese govt rejects Darfur SLA’s proposal to postpone talks

KHARTOUM, Aug 7, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — The Sudanese government criticized the proposal presented by Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) to the African Union (AU) to postpone the Abuja talks to the first week in October instead of the date 24 August set by the AU.

Speaking to Sudanese Media Centre (SMC), the official spokesman of the government’s delegation to the Abuja talks, Ibrahim Mohamed Ibrahim, said that the SLM proposal was aimed at delaying time, pointing out that this was not consistent with the required commitment to hastily resolve the problem in Darfur.

He said that the government had completed all its preparations to continue with negotiations on 24 August as announced by the AU.

He went on to say that if the armed movements had any organizational problems then it was their responsibility to find their own solutions without delaying the talks.

He added that the Darfur talks are imperative and do not require apologies or delays.
