Second Rwandan battalion takes position in Sudan’s Darfur
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Aug 8, 2005 (PANA) — Rwanda has deployed a
second battalion comprising 538 troops under the
African Union plan to enhance its peacekeeping
mission in the strife-torn Darfur region of western
Sudan.

The latest arrivals are stationed at Zalingue, the AU
Conflict Management Centre here said on Monday.
Also, 50 Rwandan policemen have been sent to Darfur
to reinforce the civilian police component of the AU
Mission in Sudan (AMIS).
“With the deployment of the Rwandan battalion, AMIS
now has three new battalions in Darfur,” said
ambassador Ki Doulaye Corentin, head of the AU Darfur
Integrated Task Force.
Under the AU plan for the enhancement of AMIS before
the end of September 2005, two more battalions would
be deployed from Nigeria, while Rwanda, Senegal and
South Africa would contribute one battalion each.
