Ugandan summons media over report on Garang’s death
KAMPALA, Aug 9, 2005 (Sudan Tribune) — Ugandan Government has summoned media managers over the way their organizations have handled the death of Sudan’s first vice president John Garang, the official Radio Uganda reported.
This came after the Khartoum government and authorities in Juba made several calls to Kampala after reading the reports from the Ugandan media.
The Red pepper, a local tabloid in yesterday story alleged that Garang was shot twice in the head.
The government spokesman, James Nsaba Buturo, said government will institute punitive measures against media houses carrying such unfounded reports.
Buturo added “the president is very concerned about such a baseless report after Sudanese officials called us to find out if the report was true.”
He clarified that media freedom should not be sacrificed at the expense of the country’s security.
