Bad Roads ‘Hindering Access to the Sudan’

by Vincent Bartoo, The East African Standard.

Aug 26, 2005 (Nairobi) — A collapsed road network has hindered business between Sudan and Kenya.

A meeting between Ministry of Roads engineers and the Kenya Roads Board in Eldoret was told that the road from West Pokot to Lokichoggio into Sudan was in a deplorable state.

The engineers asked the board to fix the roads so Kenyan traders can take advantage of the prevailing peace.

The meeting was told that bandits took advantage of the bad road to attack slow moving trucks.

KRB chairman Alfred Juma, however, blamed the poor state of the road especially from Lokichoggio, on the unratified border between Kenya and Sudan.

The border has not been marked out and no infrastructure exist,” he said.
