Fiji islands send police officers to serve UN in Sudan
Aug 29, 2005 — Police officers are expected to leave for Sudan in teams of eight next month, as soon as the United Nations can confirm travel dates.
Acting corporate communications director, Sylvia Low confirmed this and said two officers from the force, as well as two military officers, were already there on reconnaissance duties.
Ms Low said officers have already been identified and the UN would meet the costs of the exercise. The trip is for a 12-month duration.
Meanwhile, Ms Low said a recruitment drive for 253 regular officers and 200 police support officers, formerly known as special constables, would be paid for through the additional $4million that was granted in this year’s supplementary budget.
On the relocation of Police headquarters, Ms Low said the Public Service Commission was looking for funds for officer fit-outs before confirming the relocation to the Manohan Complex.
This complex is situated at the corner of Wainivula Road and Kings Road.
Ms Low said the review on the storage and removal of exhibits, which was expected to be presented at the chief officer’s meeting last week would instead be tabled this week.
She said the review was undertaken by ACP Crime Kevueli Bulamainaivalu, after a number of exhibits were unaccounted for in the 2004 Auditor-General’s Report.
