Sudan govt reports alleged Darfur cease-fire violations to AU, UN

Aug 29, 2005 (Khartoum) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has informed the AU and UN about the rebel attack on 23 and 24 August, which took place in Malam region is part of Nyala locality [southern Darfur, western Sudan].

The state minister for foreign affairs, Najib al-Khayr Abd-al-Wahhab, condemned the incident and considered it a contradiction of the commitments made by the SLM [Sudan Liberation Movement] in the security protocol which was signed in Abuja last December. It also spoils the atmosphere for the success of the forthcoming talks in Abuja and [other] commitments and promises made.

In a statement to Suna, Mr Najib said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would send details of these incidents to the UN considering it a partner in the current efforts to bring security and stability in Darfur.

Najib al-Khayr said it was sad the attack took place at a time when the AU and international partners were preparing to make the necessary arrangements to resume the Abuja talks in way that would make it final and decisive in mid September.

Malam region was attacked by rebel groups on the 23 August. The rebels stole a number of cars.

The rebels also attacked the same region on 24 August and shot at displaced civilians and kidnapped seven. They also stole 3,100 camels.
